Aonui Architecture received a 2016 New Zealand Architecture Award, Wellington Architecture Award, in the small project architecture category.
The judges’ citation said:
The sloping roof line and corrugated aluminum cladding of this very charming artist studio and sleepout give just a hint of farm vernacular. Within the box, plywood cladding softens and warms. A ‘drawbridge’ extends the useable space of this prefabricated structure, but when the owners are away it can be raised for security. Interestingly, when down, it opens at just the right height to form an outdoor bar! A loft bed extends the studio’s 10 square metres area, providing room for a pay space or occasional guest.
